From the moment you arrive at Lilydale Airport, you'll know this isn't your typical flying experience. Instead of busy terminals and departure gates, you'll find a friendly country airfield where aviation is still personal, relaxed and full of character.
Your adventure begins at our Tiger Moth hangar, where you'll have the opportunity to meet your pilot, take a closer look at the aircraft and soak up the unique atmosphere of one of Victoria's busiest general aviation airports. As aircraft come and go throughout the day, you'll experience the sights, sounds and unmistakable smell of real aviation before your own journey begins.
We recommend arriving around 10 minutes before your scheduled flight. This gives you plenty of time to park, complete any necessary paperwork, ask questions, and enjoy the anticipation as your flight is prepared.
Whether it's your first time in a vintage aircraft or you've dreamed of flying in a Tiger Moth for years, we'll make sure you feel welcome from the moment you arrive. Our aim is simple: to make your visit every bit as memorable as the flight itself.
Before taking to the skies, we'll spend a few minutes getting you ready for your Tiger Moth adventure.
Your pilot will give you a thorough safety briefing, explaining how to climb into the aircraft, fasten your harness, use the communication headset and what to expect during the flight. You'll also have plenty of opportunity to ask questions—whether you're curious about the aircraft, the route or simply wondering what flying in an open cockpit feels like.
If you've chosen one of our aerobatic experiences, we'll explain each manoeuvre before you fly and make sure you're comfortable with what's planned. Nothing will come as a surprise, and your comfort and enjoyment are always our priority.
Once everything is ready, you'll watch as the Tiger Moth comes to life in the traditional way—with the propeller hand-swung to start the engine. It's a wonderful reminder that you're about to experience aviation just as it was in the 1930s.
After a final check, you'll taxi out, line up on the runway, and in just a few moments the Tiger Moth will lift gently into the sky, beginning an unforgettable journey over the Yarra Valley.
Flying in an open-cockpit Tiger Moth is unlike travelling in a modern aircraft, so dressing appropriately will help you stay comfortable and enjoy every minute of your flight.
We recommend wearing comfortable, casual clothing that's suitable for the day's weather. Even on warm days, the airflow in the open cockpit can feel cooler once you're airborne, so bringing a light jumper or an extra layer is always a good idea. During the cooler months, warm layers, a windproof jacket and gloves will help keep you comfortable.
Please wear enclosed, flat shoes such as runners or walking shoes. High heels, sandals and loose footwear aren't suitable for flying.
To complete the authentic vintage flying experience, we provide a classic leather flying jacket, a leather flying helmet with an integrated headset, and a pair of traditional flying goggles. Not only do they help keep you comfortable in the open cockpit, they also make for fantastic photographs before and after your flight.
Loose items such as scarves, hats and anything that could be caught by the wind should be left safely on the ground or securely stored before your flight. You'll have the opportunity to leave personal belongings in the hangar while you're in the air.
Dress for the weather, bring your sense of adventure, and we'll take care of the rest.
Your safety and enjoyment are our highest priorities. Every flight is conducted in accordance with Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) regulations, and our beautifully restored de Havilland Tiger Moth is maintained to the highest standards by qualified aircraft maintenance engineers.
Before every flight, the aircraft undergoes a thorough pre-flight inspection, and your pilot will provide a comprehensive safety briefing so you'll know exactly what to expect before leaving the ground.
You'll be securely fitted with a full safety harness and an integrated headset, allowing you to communicate with your pilot throughout the flight. If at any stage you'd like to ask a question or simply let us know how you're feeling, we're only a button press away.
Your comfort is just as important as your safety. Flight routes are selected to provide the best possible experience while taking weather conditions into account, and we won't fly unless the conditions are suitable for both safety and enjoyment. If poor weather prevents your flight from going ahead, we'll happily reschedule your booking for another day.
Whether you're an experienced aviator or taking your very first flight in a light aircraft, our goal is to make your Tiger Moth experience enjoyable, memorable and, above all, safe.
One of the wonderful things about flying in an open-cockpit Tiger Moth is that no two flights are ever the same. As the seasons change, so does the Yarra Valley, offering a fresh perspective every time you take to the skies.
Spring brings the countryside back to life. Fresh green paddocks, blossoming gardens and vineyards bursting into colour create a spectacular backdrop for your flight. The air is often cool, smooth and crystal clear, making it one of the most enjoyable times of the year to experience vintage aviation.
With its long days and brilliant blue skies, summer showcases the Yarra Valley at its very best. Early morning and late afternoon flights offer comfortable temperatures, beautiful golden light and breathtaking views across the vineyards, rolling hills and the Dandenong Ranges.
Autumn transforms the valley into a patchwork of gold, amber and crimson. As the vineyards change colour, the landscape becomes one of Victoria's most picturesque. Combined with clear air and excellent visibility, it's easy to see why autumn is a favourite time of year for many of our passengers.
Winter has a charm all of its own. Wrapped in a traditional leather flying jacket, helmet and goggles, you'll experience the Tiger Moth much as pilots did generations ago. Crisp air, dramatic winter light and peaceful countryside create an unforgettable atmosphere, while the open cockpit makes every flight feel like a journey back to aviation's golden age.
No matter when you choose to fly, every season offers something unique. The scenery may change throughout the year, but the thrill of flying a genuine de Havilland Tiger Moth remains timeless.
A Tiger Moth flight is an experience worth sharing, and family and friends are more than welcome to come along.
There's plenty to see and enjoy while you're preparing for your flight. They can watch the pre-flight checks, see the Tiger Moth come to life with its traditional hand-swung propeller, and wave you off as you take to the skies. It's all part of the experience, and many guests tell us their family enjoyed the visit almost as much as they enjoyed the flight itself.
Our hangar provides a relaxed place to wait, with seating and barbecue facilities available for your use. It's the perfect setting to spend some time together before or after your flight, whether you're celebrating a special occasion or simply enjoying a day out in the Yarra Valley.
Family and friends are welcome to take photographs before and after your flight, and there are plenty of opportunities to capture memorable moments with the aircraft. If you're celebrating a birthday, anniversary or another special occasion, just let us know—we'll do our best to help make the day even more memorable.
Whether you're flying solo or sharing the day with loved ones, we look forward to welcoming you all to Tiger Moth Joy Flights Yarra Valley.
Don't forget your camera! A Tiger Moth flight is an experience you'll want to remember, and there are plenty of opportunities to capture some truly special moments.
Before your flight, you're welcome to take photographs with the aircraft while it's parked outside the hangar. Dressed in your leather flying jacket, helmet and goggles, you'll look every bit the vintage aviator, making for some unforgettable keepsake photos.
Family and friends are welcome to take photographs and videos as you prepare for departure, watch the Tiger Moth's traditional hand-swung engine start, and capture your take-off and landing. These are often some of the most memorable moments of the day.
You're welcome to take photographs and videos during your flight as well. Just remember that an open cockpit comes with plenty of wind! Phones and cameras can easily be torn from your grasp if they're not held securely, so please take extra care whenever using them in the air.
Whether it's your first flight or one you've dreamed about for years, we hope you'll leave with photographs and memories you'll treasure for a lifetime.
Once you're back on the ground, there's no need to rush away. Take a moment to soak it all in—it's not every day you get to fly in an authentic de Havilland Tiger Moth.
After the aircraft has been shut down, you're welcome to spend some time chatting with your pilot about the flight, the history of the Tiger Moth, or anything else you're curious about. Whether you'd like to know more about vintage aviation, the aircraft itself, or the places you flew over, we're always happy to answer your questions.
It's also the perfect opportunity to take a few more photographs with the aircraft while the excitement is still fresh. Family and friends are welcome to join you, and we're more than happy to help take a group photo so everyone can be part of the memory.
If you've made use of our barbecue facilities or are simply enjoying the relaxed atmosphere of the hangar, you're welcome to stay a little longer before heading off to explore the Yarra Valley or continue your day.
We hope your Tiger Moth flight is more than just another activity—it’s an experience you'll remember for years to come, and we look forward to welcoming you back for another adventure in the future.
